Stand up and speak out

Trans kids should not have to advocate for themselves or explain their existence. Their parents are not always able to speak out publicly out of concern for their children’s privacy. You can help.

  • If you work for a publicly-facing or serving organization, make sure that their LGBTQ policy is public and easy to find. If you don’t have a statement of support, write one and post it.

  • If you work in any capacity at a school, share these LGBTQ student rights (backed by CA Ed Code)

  • If someone says something ignorant or offensive about trans people in your presence, speak up. Respectfully correct misunderstandings and offer information. Know your rights.

  • If an individual or organization is preemptively complying with the executive orders (that are not legally binding) , call them out on it if it is safe for you to do so.

Hang a pride progress flag (support trans creators) or wear a pin to show trans kids they are safe with you.

Stay Informed

It’s tempting to stay away from the news when it is so disheartening. But staying informed helps you speak up to support. It also takes the burden of providing education and information off of trans kids and their families.

Act

Attacks on the trans community are changing and increasing every day of this new administration. It makes a difference when your elected representatives hear your comments. It slows down the legislative process and shows them that issues are urgent to their constituents.  Please don’t stop contacting them!

If your family is associated with a youth sports club, send this letter and urge them to take a stand

Support

If you can, please give to these organizations who are working tirelessly to fight the administration and to keep the community informed: ACLU, Lambda Legal, Transgender Law Center, NCLR, Open Books, Queer Trans Project, Elevated Access, TGIJP, Trans Justice, Trans Youth Emergency Project and mutual aid societies.
